Whose Side Are You On?

Our gospel this Sunday tells Luke’s version of Jesus’ calling of the first disciples. (Luke 5:1-11) To mark this story, we will sing one of the most popular hymns in the American Spanish language tradition: Pescador de Hombres (Fishers of Men). The hymn’s repeated refrain says,

O Lord, with your eyes you have searched me,
and while smiling have spoken my name;
now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me;
by your side I will seek other seas.

     This simple verse captures the essence of the story: Jesus comes upon a group of simple fishermen and gently captures their hearts. They leave the security of the work they know to follow this charismatic teacher and become far more than they ever dreamed.

     What might this story call us to? It points to evangelism, certainly; and also to how we might respond to abundance in our lives. Of course, it also points to our own call: What is Jesus asking of us? Welcome to St. Paul’s this Sunday, as we delve into the deep waters of God’s blessings.

Collect
Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
