St. Pauls Church

Welcome!

St. Paul's Church, as illustrated by local artist Norman Rockwell, is located right in the heart of the historic town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Church itself was built in 1884, and is rich with a history of its own in the region.

St. Paul's is an active parish and serves the local community through works and worship. All seekers are welcome to join us, either during services, or simply for private meditation and prayer in one of the most beautiful and peaceful old New England Churches.

St. Paul’s occupies one of the four corners of the primary intersection of Stockbridge. In addition to the Church, the property includes the Rectory and Parish House.

Founded in 1834, for its first 50 years St. Paul’s was housed in a wooden Gothic-Revival structure on the same site as the present church. The old church was taken down in 1883 and replaced by the existing church that was designed by Charles F. McKim and Stanford White, and given by Charles E. Butler as a memorial to his wife, Susan Ridley Sedgwick Butler. St. Paul’s is blessed by the works of numerous celebrated artists. The 1884 Roosevelt organ has been enlarged to 1600 speaking pipes and retains the original tracker action and slider wind chests.

The Parish House is home during the week to the St. Paul’s Children’s Center, a fully-accredited and licensed daycare center serving the surrounding community. Nursery care is provided here during the Sunday 10:00 service. This first floor space is also used for church suppers, meetings, and similar activities. It has a full kitchen and handicap access restrooms. The second floor includes offices and a meeting room that hosts community groups and is the headquarters of Sunday School.

The Rectory is an historic Stockbridge home, now located adjacent to the Church

Located adjacent to the Church is the Memorial Garden. The gently curving wall has space for memorial markers; ashes may be interred in the ground below the markers. A fountain, seating, and landscaping make the garden a special place for contemplation. Completed in 2006, the Memorial Garden is the centerpiece of an extensive capital project that also included construction of a parking lot at the rear of the Parish House, a new playground for the Children’s Center, extensive landscaping, and stonework.
